City Council Elections
City Council members are elected to four-year terms. Council members serve staggered terms with three or four seats alternatively expiring. The Council is divided into three ward members, two at-large members, the Mayor and the Recorder.

Election Day
Election day is the first Tuesday of June. The next election is scheduled for June 3, 2014.
  • Voting is held at Ranson City Hall
  • Polls are open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  • Ranson voters use paper ballots
Candidate Filing Period
All persons wishing to run for municipal office must file appropriate documents with the City Recorder.  Those persons interested in running for any city office must be eligible to vote in Ranson, must file a Certificate of Announcement and submit a filing fee of $25.

Certificate of announcement shall be filed with the Recorder not earlier than the second Monday in January next preceding the June election and not later than the last Saturday in January next preceding the June election, and must be received before midnight, eastern standard time, of that day or, if mailed, shall be postmarked by the United States Postal Service before that hour.

Candidate filing period for the June 3, 2014, election shall begin on Monday, January 6, and end at midnight on Saturday, January 25. Candidate announcement forms may be dropped off at Ranson City Hall between the hours on 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. City Hall will not be open on Saturday, January 25. 

City Recorder
The City Recorder is the local elections official responsible for conducting and coordinating municipal elections.  Duties of the election official include:
  • Receipt and process of candidate filing documents
  • Prepare necessary public notices and resolutions calling for general and special municipal elections
  • Conduct election in accordance with West Virginia and city election laws
Next Scheduled Election
The next City election is scheduled for June 3, 2014.  The following offices are up for election:
  • Recorder
  • At-Large Council
  • Ward 1 Council
  • Ward 2 Council
Following the June 3, 2014, election, the next city election is scheduled for June 5, 2017, for the positions of:
  • Mayor
  • At-Large Council
  • Ward 3 Council
